Lawson's Dry Hills

Marlborough, New Zealand

When you combine more than 20 years’ experience with an inquisitive spirit, the result is a perfect balance of knowledge and innovation. These two traits can be found in every bottle of Lawson’s Dry Hills wine. The original company vineyard was planted in 1980 by Ross and Barbara Lawson, who launched the Lawson’s Dry Hills label twelve years later, in 1992. Today, the company’s wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and our famous Gewurztraminer, all made from fruit grown in Wairau, Waihopai, Omaka and Awatere Valleys. These different regions and carefully selected vineyard sites provide varying characteristics derived from the different soils and microclimates, giving many options when it comes to blending to that much-anticipated Lawson’s style. The team at LDH are very ‘hands on’, living and breathing every part of the viticultural and winemaking process. The resulting wines offer an authentic expression of the place and the grape variety, pulled together from our passion for wine. This combo of elements is a winning formula with numerous gold medals certificates covering the cellar door walls and shelves buckling under the weight of all their trophies
Senior Winemaker: Marcus Wright Marcus acquired a love of good wine whilst working as a research scientist in 1997, Marcus worked with Montana in Gisborne as a vintage Cellar hand before heading to South America to work the 2000 vintage in Chile for Vina San Pedro, then onto the Loire for vintage with Jacques Lurton. He started with Lawson's Dry Hills in 2001 and continues to ensure that only premium, elegant, fruit focused wines come out under the Lawson’s Dry Hills brand.
Viticulturalist: Mark Ludemann  Mark began his career in Viticulture with Sandihurst Wines in 1987, before moving onto Montana for three years in 1999. He subsequently managed Seresin’s Organic Raupo creek Estate for a further four years before joining Lawson's Dry Hills in 2006. Sustainable vineyard practices are the focus, along with work on crop levels to produce premium quality fruit.
Founder: Ross Lawson Ross Lawson wore many hats during his lifetime: musterer, sheep-shearer, swimming pool/building contractor, opossum hunter, union organizer and of course viticulturist. He was a leading influence in the New Zealand Screwcap Wineseal Initiative in 2001, which saw screwcaps used on 90% of New Zealand bottled wine by 2008. These diverse skills allied with a never-ceasing quest for perfection helped shape Lawson’s Dry Hills into the successful wine company it is today. Sadly Ross passed away after losing his battle with cancer but his legacy lives on.
