Te Mata Coleraine 2022

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
  • Te Mata's legendary claret - Coleraine
  • Coleraine has forged itself as one of NZ's top drops for almost 30yrs. A powerful Bordeaux blend lead by Cabernet Sauvignon
  • The 2022 Coleraine is one for the record books much like the 2013, 2008 or even the 1998 of last century and is one of the most hotly anticipated reds in NZ. The 2019 as Sam Kim phrases it is 'Designed for life' . With a drinking period between 2030 till 2040, it's all about can you resist popping the cork for a decade. Especially with ratings like 100/100 & 98/100 along with Bob Campbell saying 'its one of the best Coleraine's he has ever tasted. Not a bad accolade considering the stunners that have worn the Coleraine name!
It was 1982 when the first Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot blend was created from the then single vineyard named Coleraine. A historical name that has been given several of the previous Buck family farms, after the hometown of John’s grandfather in Northern Ireland. Legacy certainly follows this name as Coleraine the wine has been the pinnacle of NZ reds right from the beginning.
The 2022 vintage had a huge task living up to both the legacy of Coleraine gone past. Fortunately with ratings like 98/100 (Bob Campbell) 100/100 (Sam Kim) and 5 Stars from every wine writer on the planet, long time winemaker Peter Cowley as seemed to create almost Coleraine perfection. Internationally reviewers have called the 2018 edition a 'Wine Legend' by Decanter Magazine and 'A National Treasure' by Jancis Robinson MW. Local reviewers keep the praise going with Wine Orbit's Sam Kim ending his 100/100 review with the description 'Flawless and Spellbinding' while Bob Campbell MW scribes '
This is elegance on a grand scale and one of the best vintages I’ve tasted”
A time honoured tradition of Coleraine winemaking hasn’t changed much over the years starting with hand harvesting before traditional warm ferment and extended skin contact. Maturing the wine takes a long 19 months in French Oak barrel with parcel blending incorporated. The one noticeable difference in the 2014 vintage is the smaller production so get what you can before it all goes!
